In 1921 Congress authorized the Peace Dollar, which celebrated the end of the World War I which was thought to “the war to end all wars.” Sadly history has proven the fallacy of that assumption.
The design was the work of Anthony de Francisci. De Francisci original design featured an eagle breaking a sword, but when it was pointed out that this image symbolized defeat, not peace, the familiar work with the eagle perched on a peace mountain replaced it.
The entire mintage of slightly over 1 million 1921 Peace dollars was struck at the Philadelphia mint in December. It was quickly determined the relief of the design was too high and that adjustments would have to be made. Nearly all 1921 Peace dollars show weakness in Ms. Liberty’s hair and often in the middle of the eagle’s wing on the reverse.
The coin above shows a slightly better than average strike with minimal marks, especially on the reverse, and original, undipped surfaces.
