The gift of the seasons
As the earth makes its annual orbit around the sun, its axis shifts, producing the four seasons that are experienced throughout the year. Winter, spring, summer and autumn are most evident in the north and south temperate zones where the changing climate creates vastly different worlds that define the way people live.
Science aside, the legendary snow of the great Canadian winter has romanticized this harsh season for much of the world, becoming the single most defining characteristic of this land.
But snow-laden branches and skates on ice are just a couple of the many seasonal gifts in the land of the maple tree. As winter gives way to spring, the leaves of Canada's national tree announce their return with a delicate canopy of buds floating above the people below, who are drawn outdoors by the warming air.
By summer, the leaves are at their fullest, providing shade from the sun whose heat now rivals that of tropical climes. The land is alive with activity, an energy that endures throughout the autumn as the air begins to cool and fading leaves set the land ablaze with fiery colour. The harvest announces that winter is but a short time away-a new season of wonder is about to begin!
