Owner Comments:

Sharply Repunched 49. This is not the earliest die state of this variety but the repunching is easily seen with the naked eye. As they sometimes do, NGC has sort of baffled me by assigning this coin an MS60 grade. It is semi-prooflike and totally free of wear with some moderate ticks seen in the obverse fields. But none of these marks are deep or detracting and, in my opinion, this coin has the look of an MS62. As a date, the 1849 half eagle is quite common in circulated grades but it is rare and undervalued in Uncirculated. You have to go back all the way to the Milas sale in 1995 to find a slabbed MS60 example that has been auctioned; Milas: 475 brought $2,310. A very pleasing example of this underappreciated date and a neat variety to boot.
