Owner Comments:

In 1840 Christian Gobrecht’s Coronet Head design was adapted for the quarter eagle. Unlike the other Coronet Head denominations, the two and a half dollar gold piece was deemed too small to accommodate the motto, “In God we trust,” which was added to the other coin designs in 1866. As a result the same basic design ran from 1840 to 1907 which made it one of the longest type coin design runs in U.S. coin history.

The coin is easy enough to acquire as a type coin, but there are many rare dates in the series. Among them are 1841 (“the little princess”), 1848 “CAL” (made from an early shipment of California gold) and 1854-S (among the first coins issued from the San Francisco mint).

This 1907 quarter eagle is a Gem Mint State coin with very lustrous surfaces and superior coppery gold toning. It is an exceptional example of this very attractive type coin.
