Owner Comments:

In 1867 the mint dropped the rays from the Shield nickel design. The new reverse lacked depth and was not as attractive, but the less complicated format made the coins easier to strike and reduced die wear. The Shield Nickel would remain unchanged until 1883 when the Liberty nickel replaced it. This PR-66+ Cam 1881 Shield Nickel is a Gem quality grade example with very clean fields and bright mirrors.
