The 1799 Bust dollar is the most common date in the series with a reported mintage of 423,515. This is the highest reported mintage for the entire early dollar series. Although mintages are not always a definitive indicator of rarity for a number of reasons (e.g. coins stuck in one year, dated another / coins dated one year but delivered in another) the number of surviving examples supports this high mintage figure.

In 1799 all those who consigned silver to the mint to be coined into U.S. requested silver dollars. As a result the mint did not produce any other silver coin denomination in 1799, and all of its silver coin resources went into the production of silver dollars.

The coin pictured above has sharply defined features with covered with bluish-gray toning with golden highlights. This piece was once in a very old New England collection, and I admired the piece from the day I saw it many years ago. After a number of years the owner agreed to sell it to me to raise funds to take a vacation with his wife.
