Owner Comments:

1886-O VAM-11 PCGS MS62 DMPLThis is an oustanding rarity in fully prooflike, both sides with deep mirrors. The population reports are misleading. There are only a handful total and they rarely step out of very stable collections. This issue is universally regarded as an extreme rarity. An ANACS 63PL (not DMPL, but close) previously acquired from John Love sold for over $8K in the NY ANA sale back in 1997 and it was considered a rare opportunity to acquire one of these.Deep mirror mint state specimens that Heritage's archived records show are as follows. The finest example they auctioned was introduced as a raw coin in the ANA Signature sale (lot 6929) on 08/04/1998, graded by them as an MS65 DMPL, which sold for $36,800. It reappeared in the 2001 FUN sale (lot 7437) in a PCGS MS64 DMPL holder and sold for $48,300. Another PCGS MS62 DMPL (another one, not mine) was auctioned in the 1998 FUN sale as lot 7295. Finally an NGC MS60 DPL was in an Internet auction that closed on 10/30/2001.This example is PQ for the grade and is acceptably choice. The score assigned by the registry is a laughable insult to the rarity and desirability of this coin. Additionally, the strike is exceptional for a New Orleans dollar of the era.Acquired 02/26/2004 from Don Rinkor.DMPL Condition Census (date): 3 x 64DM(P), 1 x 64DM(N), 2 x 63DM(P), 3 x 63DM(N), 5 x 62DM(P), 1 x 61DM(P), 2 x 61DM(N), 2 x 60DM(P), 2 x 60DM(N), 2 x 58DM(N), 1 x 55DM(N)
