Owner Comments:

The 1856-S half eagle is common enough in VF and EF grades but it becomes scarce in the lower AU grades and it is rare in properly graded AU58. It is very rare in Uncirculated with fewer than a dozen known and nearly all of the Uncirculated pieces I am aware of are marginal MS60 to MS61’s. This example is as nice a “slider” as you are likely to find. It shows lovely dark golden color which is clearly original. In fact, this is among the few early S mint half eagles of any date that I have seen lately that is not weither a seawater coin or a piece that has been processed. Trends jumps to $6,500 in MS60 and I can guarantee you that this lovely AU58 is far more attractive than most of the coins that have brought in the $6,000-8,000 at auction or via private treaty sale in the past decade.
