Located in Arizona, the park consists of over 1.2 million acres and receives over 4 million visitors annually, mostly to its South Rim area.

Aside from the Native Americans who had known the area for centuries, many explorers ventured into the canyon during the 1800's, including John Wesley Powell. It was not until 1906, however, that the area came under Federal protection when President Theodore Roosevelt declared it a Federal Game Preserve. In 1908, he changed its status to a US National Monument. Finally, in 1919 it became the 17th United States National Park
