Owner Comments:

O.116 50/00 R2. CAC. Another engraving error from an inattentive mint die maker. The late die state of this marriage has the 50/00 lapped away as well as significant portion of the stems and claws on the reverse and is an extremely rare and valuable die state that has never been seen in mint state but still may be out there. Another blunder from the early mint in a year when the pace a coin production continued to increase leading to the adaptation of the steam press later in the year that prompted a change to reeded edge half dollars. A huge leap in manufacturing technology in that era. "The engraver mistakenly punched a 0 where the 5 belonged on the reverse, then corrected his mistake, producing this popular blundered die variety. This piece is frosty and lustrous beneath olive-gold and iridescent toning. Obtained from the Heritage FUN Auction, 1/8/2010, Lot 3458.
