Owner Comments:

1928-S 50C MS64 PCGS-Secure. Shades of violet, russet, and light blue grace the surfaces that are still mostly untoned silver-gray in the centers, with good luster and an above average strike that shows a little weakness on the branch hand and the eagle's lower leg feathers. Skirtlines, however, are full, which is something rarely encounted on the '28 S; even on the choicest MS examples. This is one of the things that makes this coin really special. Darker toning around the periphery of this all-natural coin, but not too dark, as to be distracting. The originality of this piece is the other thing that, I think, adds to it's allure and desireability.

The 1928 S comes in large and small S mintmarked varieties. This coin is the 'Small S' variety.

Passed up many a 28 S and, finally, got this one at a fabulous price. Others that I have seen are either struck worse or horribly bag-marked. This one has clean surfaces with just a couple of minor abrasions on the central devices. Fields are clean & unblemished.

Important varieties:

V 101 – Small S. Small rounded serifs as in cents. Often weak.

V 102 – Larger S. Larger sharp serifs as in some quartets. Often weak.

V 103 – Filled S

The 1928-S is a difficult mintmarked issue, especially in the higher mint state levels. There are just 263 extant MS 64 survivors from the 2 Major services. PCGS has certified 61 examples finer and NGC 40 finer as of (4/10)

Mintage is 1,940,000
