James K. Polk is one of the most significant, but least known, presidents. When Mexico rejected the annexation of Texas, he led the nation during the victorious Mexican American war. As a result of our vitory, Polk successfully championed the purchase and creation of California, Arizon, and New Mexico. Polk also is credited for the opening of the United States Naval Academy, Smithsonian Institute, and the groundbreaking of the Washington Monument. Also, Polk authorized the first issuance of US postage stamps.
