Owner Comments:
The year is 1976 and it was an exciting time in our country when we celebrated 200 years as an independent nation. Marking the occasion of our independence, the quarter-dollar, half-dollar, and dollar coins all had patriotic commemorative designs. The reverse of this MS-66, 1976-D, Kennedy Half Dollar highlights an image of Independence Hall. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Independence Hall is the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. From 1775 to 1783, Independence Hall served as the primary meeting place of the Second Continental Congress. The reverse of the $2 bill has a rendition of a painting by John Trumbull entitled “The Declaration of Independence”. The setting for this painting is the assembly room of Independence Hall where the signing of the Declaration of Independence took place on July 4, 1776. After the signing, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud to the public just outside Independence Hall in Independence Square. Because of the residence act of 1790 establishing a permanent capitol in Washington DC, Independence Hall became the site of our temporary capital until preparations in Washington DC was complete. Now a national landmark, Independence Hall is part of “Independence National Historic Park”. The importance of Independence Hall as a symbol of our struggle for liberty and freedom in our nation’s history cannot be overstated.
