1854, the first year of $3 gold coins, saw the largest production run with 138,618 business strikes along with 15 proofs being struck. For this year only, the letters "DOLLARS" on the reverse were much smaller than on following years, creating a one year sub-type. This date is one of only a handful for dates that is not considered rare in the entire three dollar gold series.
