Owner Comments:

VAM-1A NGC MS64 DPL (SPIKE IN 8)Well struck, flashy luster, deep mirrors, with only a few tiny, insignificant marks. Attractive with great eye appeal. The NGC population is 52 with only one (MS 65 DPL) graded higher. This is among a handful of MS 64 DPLs I have seen pass through auctions and dealer inventories over the years that are a hair's breadth away from full gem. I would venture to guess that the 52 is actually a bit lower due to break-out resubmissions that were common without tag returns for the 1880-1882 New Orleans dollars, due to the enormous valuation step up from 64 to 65.Even without that consideration, I have long felt that 1881-O MS 64 DMPL is a fantastic value with tremendous long term appreciation potential, particularly if one is careful in choosing a PQ specimen and doesn't tie oneself to a small margin over grey/blue sheets. There is a LOT of room to value a coin that can fall anywhere between the MS 63 and MS 65 prices.
