Owner Comments:

VAM-4 PCGS MS64 DMPLTo my knowledge this is the singular example of this coveted variety in DMPL. In fact, there are no VAM-3 or VAM-4 certifications, except this one in DMPL, and only one (VAM-4 NGC MS62 PL) in PL. There is no reason to believe, based on the origin of the variety, that these should be so elusive. In my opinion and observation, 1884 is typically underrated as a DMPL, probably due to the proof population and the fact that PL and DMPL populations are generally equally split. This coin is in a PCGS holder, unattributed. The variety is characterized by a small raised dot to the right of the designer's initial ("M") on the obverse (base of neck) and the reverse (bow). VAM-3 differs from VAM-4 in that the size of the obverse dot is larger on the VAM-3. There has been speculation as to the significance of the dots worth looking into.Prooflike Condition Census (variety): 1 x 64DM(P), 1 x 62PL(N)
