Owner Comments:
Because of the Civil War, surviving 1861 gold dollars are the 3rd. most common date in the gold dollar series. The war started in the spring of 1861 and by the end of the year thousands of businesses in the North and South had failed. In late December 1861, banks stopped paying out gold coins at par and many 1861 gold dollars were set aside and hoarded. As a result, this date is frequently found in high AU and Mint State grades.
