Owner Comments:

PCGS graded MS 66 BN, EAC MS64+
Variety: N-2, MDS, CC#1 tie
Ex: Gaskill, Naftzger

This coin is arguably the finest 1834 N-2 (see my Journal entry, URL below). The variety is easily recognized by the die crack through all the stars. The luster and surfaces of this specimen are excellent. The reverse has a lovely faded coppery glow. The obverse more faded to brown, but is very pleasing. There are no contact marks worthy of mention.

I bought this coin in February 2009 (Super Bowl Sunday) in the Goldbergs' sale of the Ted Naftzger collection. My auction notes indicate that it was the only 1834 I was considering, though my journal entry suggests otherwise. I was able to get it for exactly my preset maximum bid.

From the Goldberg's catalog:

Small 8, Large Stars, Medium Letters. Highly lustrous and very attractive frosty bluish steel and olive with underlying faded mint red showing through on both sides. No notable defects, essentially a flawless cent. MDS with only a few tiny points extending from the dentil tips at the bottom of the obverse. There is a multiple profile from the browlock down to the chin with additional doubling on the eye and LIBERTY, all caused by die bounce. Called MS65 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #28683. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is MS64+, very close to MS65.
