NGC US Coin Census for Morgan Dollars (1878-1921)

Owner Comments:

Ultra deep frost on the obverse and reverse devices show up on this gem prooflike Morgan. The population census for this Top 100 8/7 low is very low with 4 being graded in MS65PL and only one higher in MS66PL. The total Vam 6 population graded with NGC is 12 in prooflike condition, so as you can see it is very elusive with this Vam designation. The obverse looks like it could go DPL while the reverse is definitely only PL. The mintage of the 1880-CC stands at 591,000 Morgans struck that year. In early 1881 the Annual Asssay Commission discovered that some of the issues were defective with low fineness (less silver content than normal). As a result 96,000 of the 1880-CC dollars were melted thus decreasing the net mintage to 495,000. Proof-likes make up a good percentage of the issue but it is difficult to locate a problem free specimen with minimal abrasions. Cherrypicked from the Jon Yasko collection of PL and DPL Morgans.
