Owner Comments:

The Liberty Seated, No Motto half dollar was issued from 1839 until 1866 when the San Francisco mint issued the last pieces with this design. In 1866 the mint added the motto, “In God we trust,” to all of the coins that had enough room in their designs to accommodate it. The motto arose from the wide spread religious feelings that resulted of the horrors of the Civil War. This 1860 half dollar was struck at the New Orleans mint. As such it is a reminder of a difficult time in our history when 11 states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. The coin is a very choice toned Mint State example of this historic date which saw a critical presidential election and the secession of South Carolina from the Union.
