Owner Comments:
The five cent coin that we commonly call “the nickel” is mostly made of copper. At the dawn of World War II the nickel was made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. Both metals were strategic materials during the war, and that prompted a change in composition for the coin from 1942 to 1945. During the first part of 1942 the U.S. mint system issued nickels that contained the standard composition. Mid way through 1942 the Wartime nickel, which was made of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese, replaced the standard alloy. Fortunately for collectors the mint issued nickels that were made of both compositions. This created the famous 1942 six piece Proof set which has become a favorite among collectors.
