The fifth commemorative quarter-dollar coin released in 2008 honors Hawaii, and is the 50th coin in the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. Statehood had been proposed many times throughout Hawaii's history, but it was not until 1959 that Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States.
