In 2007 the United States mint began a series of one dollar coins that depict past presidents. Four chief executives will be honored each year in the order in which they have served. It seemed fitting for me to include the George Washington dollar in my collection. Washington was truly the “indispensable man” and the greatest American of all time. Had it not been for him American might well have not won the Revolutionary War because it was his leadership that kept the Continental Army together in its darkest hours. After we had won our independence it because obvious the nation needed a strong central government than that provided by the Articles of Confederation. The new Constitution has proven to be a wonder work of political art, but it took a strong leader to head the new government, and George Washington was the only man who had the prestige to do it. Although he was reluctant to serve, especially during his second term, Washington provided the mortar that held the young nation and the new government together.
