Owner Comments:

In 1867 the mint dropped the rays from the Shield nickel design. The new reverse lacked depth and was not as attractive, but the new design made the coins easier to strike and reduced die wear. The Shield Nickel would remain unchanged until 1883 when the Liberty nickel replaced it.

This 1874 Shield is sharply struck and has wonderful luster on both sides. It is a premium coin for the MS-64 grade.
