In 1873 Congress authorized a minor increase in the weights of the dime, quarter and half dollar which brought the coins up to an even Metric weight. In the case of the dime the new weight was 2.5 grams. The weight change was noted by the placement of arrows at either side of the date in 1873 and '74. In 1875 the arrows were dropped, but the weight would remain the same until the Coinage Act of 1965, which brought us the modern copper-nickel clad coinage.
There was an economic depression when the 1873 and '74 coins were issued. As a result the mintages were quite limited and the today these coins are scarce. Proof mintages were normal for the two years, but those mintages were small. Only 1,500 of these coins were issued in Proof spread over two years, 1873 and ’74.
