In 1854 U.S. mint designers decided to remove the rays from the reverse of the quarter and half dollar. That design feature along with the arrows at either side of the date had been used to denote that those 1853 dated coins weighed less than previous pieces and could not be melted at profit for their metal content. The presence of the rays had made the striking of two the coins more difficult. Therefore it was decided that the arrows at the date would be sufficient to mark the new coins. After 1855 the arrows at the date were removed as well, and the previous "No Motto" type was resumed.

The coin shown above is an attractive piece with moderate grayish-brwon toning. It is very smooth with virtually no defects and quite choice for the MS-64 grade.
