Owner Comments:
This coin joins the 1857-O example in the Louisiana Purchase as having the Bass pedigree. This coin came from the Ambleside collection. While not nearly as rare as the 1857-0, a PCGS MS62PQ date is a rare, condition census coin. In fact, it is likely the second finest known, making it a highlight of the Louisiana Purchase. It is listed second in the Winter census in his book.
The coin has quite nice eye appeal due to its undistriburbed froster mint luster throughout both the obverse and the reverse. It has a big date, although not a thick as the 1853-O eagle. Coloration is greenish-gold.
The 1858-O is relatively common in AU and above (19th of 21) with 60 to 80 known, although only 8 - 12 known in MS. It is more common than the 1853-0, although only half as common as the 1847-O.
