Owner Comments:
The 1842-O Half Eagles is the second rarest in the half eagle series, with only three uncirculated pieces known, according to Winter. The Louisiana Purchase has two of these, including this PCGS MS61 piece that came from the Pinnacle Collection, and the NGC MS60 piece listed as from the New England collection. The finest known is an the Milas-Eliasberg coin graded MS63 by PCGS.
The PCGS MS61 piece has the Bass Collection pedigree. As is obvious from the above, it is the second finest known.. The coin is semi-prooflike with a blend of frost and reflectiveness seen in the surfaces. Both sides have a beautiful medium orange-gold color and the strike is sharper than usual with some minor weakness seen at the upper obverse and the corresponding reverse.
This coin is plated on Page 89 of the Winter book on New Orleans gold.
