Owner Comments:

The 1847-O Quarter Eagle is the most rare of denomination from the New Orleans mint. The 1845-O quarter eagle is also among the rarest southern gold coins of any denomination. Among quarter eagles it is exceeded in rarity only by such highly valued issues as the 1855-D and 1856-D. There are only three mint state coins known. This PCGS AU58 piece, along with another PCGS AU58 (see Jefferson's Change collection) are thus the three and fourth finest known of a date with only 12 to 15 known in total in AU and above. The census at AU58 is: PCGS 3/2 NGC 8/2, with one of the mint states the same coin.

The rarity of this coin is not well recognized, even in relation to other southern branch mint coins, (as of this writing) outside of the specialist community. That is why I purchased two! Perhaps one day this date from New Orleans will get more respect.

This coin has abundant frost between the stars and on the reverse. The "1" in the date is clearly repunched upward, and the inside of the "8" also shows the repunching upon extremely careful inspection.
