Owner Comments:
The 1842-O New Orleans Quarter Eagle is the second most rare of the denomination. Doug Winter lists 6 - 8 known in mint state, although this is likely a bit low (he sold a new one MS62 in June of 2008 and admitted as much). It is not as rare in mint state as the next on the rarity list, the 1856-0, but when the AU grades are taken into account, it is more rare.
This coins is from the Pinnacle Collection. The piece is notable for its superb deep orange-gold and reddish color - which, along with its originality, makes for awesome eye appeal. It also shows one of the sharpest strikes known on this date; an important feature when one considers that many 1842-O quarter eagles are very poorly detailed. A small mint-made grease spot in the lower left obverse field serves as quick identification.
The coin is shown plated on Page 54 in the Winter book on New Orleans gold.
