Owner Comments:
The 1843-O Large Date variety is fourth rarest date in high grade (AU and above), with 8 - 10 known in mint state. With the census listing of PCGS 0/0, and NGC 2/1, this NGC MS63 (CAC) is the second finest known of this rare date (see below).
This is an early die state on which the repunching at the base of the mintmark is especially clear. Both the obverse and reverse are very frosty and they display intense yellow-gold color which is typical on examples of this issue which have not been cleaned or enhanced. This piece is very sharp with full hair and feathers and the surfaces show just a few minor scuffs in the left obverse and above the eagle’s head. In actuality, there are only two examples of this variety that have been graded higher than MS61: this piece and one in a Kansas collection (ex Bass II: 358) which is off the market.
