Owner Comments:
The 1843-O Small Date is number 13 of 14 in rarity (AU and above) and 14 in all grades and mint state only. There are an estimated 35 to 45 known in mint state. These numbers reflect the fact that the 1843-O had the highest mintage of any quarter eagle of the set: an estimated 288,00w according to Breen. It is not sure how the breakout of the total 364,000 (LD and SD) is known, but obviously, there is a very significant difference between the rarity of the Large Date and Small Date.
This NGC MS63 example is exceeding nice, nicer than some coins in MS64 holders. It has great, subdued luster, with frosty greenish-gold with some design weaknesses consistent with the date.
The reverse has the trademark (for the data) die chip on the reverse field between the right wing and the "ME" in AMERICA, and three small die lumps on Liberty's neck and jaw.
