Owner Comments:
The 1852-O is the nineth rarest (out of 14) of the set, with an estimated 8 to 11 known in mint state and another 42 to 48 in AU.
The census shows (as of June 2008) PCGS 5/1 NGC 7/4, with a new NGC MS62 added in 2008.
This coin has subdued but completely original luster than comes from more than a century of toning. In fact, its originality is a stunning example. The color is a rich gold, with traces of orange on the fields of the obverse and reverse. The strike is typically weak in the center on this date (not as much as the 1846 to 1850) but this coin has a much sharper strike than normal, with only the eagle's right leg weak. The mintmark is heavily impressed, making it quite odd, and appears to be made by hand. This would make it Winter Variety #2.
