Owner Comments:

The 1847-O quarter eagle is number 10 in rarity of AU and above on the list of 14. There are an estimated 12 - 15 known in mint state, and another 38 to 45 in AU. While this is a more common date in the New Orleans eagle, the mint state quarter eagle is still quite scarce. PCGS 1/1 NGC 2/2(MS64/1(MS65), so this NGC MS63 is clearly a condition census example, not to mention an entirely original one.

This is a very special NGC MS63, as it was the subject of a long string of conversations by southen mint specialists on the PCGS US Coin Forum starting in May 29th of 2006. This point was, it has the strike of an AU58, but it has the originality and luster of a true MS63. This date typically has a poorest strike of the series, which is taken into account during the grading. This coin has a die crack that extends horizontally from 3 o'clock to nine o'clock in the fields. The reverse is struck a quarter turn from the obverse, which is undocumented elsewhere, including Winter's book.
