1893 Proof-68* ULTRA CAMEO (NGC) (CAC).
Heavily frosted motifs appear to be chiseled from living silver and floating on a sea of highly reflective molten silver. The Cameo contrast is exceptional, as is the strike and eye appeal. Of the 792 Proofs of the date produced, we have difficulty envisioning a finer survivor from that mintage. Indeed, this is currently the finest Ultra Cameo Proof of the date certified by NGC.
The frosty devices offer obvious frosty contrast with the deeply mirrored fields. This fully struck Superb Gem has a pristine obverse, and the reverse is as well preserved. Both sides present essentially as completely untoned, although the reverse field has just a hint of pale lemon color. The production of proofs fell substantially from the 1,245 pieces struck in 1892, the first year of the series. Apparently, collector interest in the new design was subdued by 1893, as only 792 pieces were issued. Simply stunning quality and eye appeal for a proof Barber Quarter.
