Owner Comments:
The 1849-O Gold Dollar is the first coin in the set. As the first year issue of Gold Dollars from New Orleans, it is very popular.
This coin is the only one known to have traded since the Bass II coin, also PCGS MS65.
This coin comes from the Pinnacle collection, and is the plate coin for Doug Winter's book.
This piece has superb natural yellow-gold color accentuated by a few small areas of coppery-red. It is well struck, totally original and superb in every respect. The date on the reverse is very well struck, which is rare. This coins appears to be Winter variety #2, the less common of the two varieties.
As MS65, it is among four MS65's that are the highest graded in the Louisiana Purchase.
Note: personally, I like the PCGS holder a lot more than the NGC holder for Gold Dollars. Because these coins are so small, the deep NGC holder makes it difficult to see the whole coin at once unobstructed.
