Owner Comments:
The 1854-O is a one-year type coin, the only three dollar coin produced at the New Orleans mint. It is one of five one-year type issues in the New Orleans complete set.
The current piece is from the Great Lakes collection, the result of an upgrade by that collector to an MS62 example. The Great Lakes collection is currently the finest three dollar coin collection known. Please see the PCGS registry set listing. It has numerous finest known listings, and every coin "was carefully chosen by Mr Hanks to insure its complete originality, eye appeal, strike, and pedigree history (when available). Just our kind of collector!
As such, you can imagine this is a nice example of this unique type coin. The color is greenish gold, and the strike is a bit weak on the date, particularly the "85".
As the three dollar coins, particularly the 1854-O and 1854-D have seen a significant rise in value in the middle part of the decade, this is hardly one of the sleeper dates of the series.
