Owner Comments:
While I also have a PCGS AU58 in this date, this is my favorite of the two. This coin resides in an older NGC holder, and is clearly a candidate for an upgrade. It is extraordinarily devoid of marks (other than a light scratch between the 12th and 13th stars), and has a very nice satiny luster with almost full cartwheel effect, demonstrating the coins complete originality. The strike is typical for the issue: a flat appearance on the obverse -- the reverse is a bit sharper. This is one of my favorite eagles in the collection as it was my first New Orleans eagle purchase.
The 1849-O eagle is a very scarce coin in all grades. It is tied for fourth in high grade rarity along with the 1856-O, behind the three key dates: 1859-O, 1841-O and 1857-O. It is on the Winter "Most Undervalued List" of No Motto New Orleans Eagles because its rarity is not appreciated outside the specialist community. An estimated 15 - 19 are known in AU and above, of which 3 - 4 are minted state.
See Jefferson's Change for the NGC AU58 in the collection.
