Owner Comments:
The 1843-O Larger letters of the more common of the two varieties of 1843-O, although only 8 or so are known in mint state. It ranks as 11 of 16 in rarity in the New Orleans half eagle series, just behind the 1845-0.
The NGC MS62 is a respectable condition census example, probably number five on the census, although it is not listed in Doug Winter's book. It was purchased in a Stack auction in January 2007 for a good value, as it was obviously not noticed as being as signficant as it was. This coin may have originated from a hoard of four to five mint state coins that came onto the market in 1999 and 2000.
The coin is fresh and original, with green gold color. There are no distracting marks, although a die crack on the obverse extends form the back of Ms Liberty's neck horizontally to star #12. On the reverse, a die crack joins the bottom of "STATES O" and extends from the first S in States to the left wing.
