NGC US Coin Census for Early Quarters (1796-1838)

Owner Comments:

The 1796 Quarter is one of the most famous coins in the United States type set. This piece marked the introduction of what has become the most useful coin in the modern U.S. economy. In the early days, however, those deposited silver at the first United States mint preferred the silver dollar and then the half dollar to the 25 cent piece.

The mint issued only 6,146, 1796 Quarters. The mint would not strike another quarter until 1804. Today only 500 to 650 examples of these coins have survived in all grades from Poor to Gem Uncirculated. Collector interest in these coins is intense, and any example that appears at a coin show or auction receives considerable attention.

The present example is a very choice piece for the VF-25 grade. The weakness noted on the head of the eagle is common for the design and does not detract from the grade.
