Owner Comments:

In the 1870s, some statesmen dreamed of an integrated international monetary system in which coins could used through out the industrialized world irrespective of exchange rates. To this end The United States produced a number of pattern coins (The $4 dollar gold piece or Stella was the most famous) that might have qualified for that proposal. The only part of the plan that reached circulation took the form of a slight increase in the weight of the dime, quarter and half dollar that brought those coins up to a Metric System weight. This minor increase in weight was denoted by placing arrows beside the date of the three coins therefore creating a minor type. These type coins were only issued in 1873 and 1874, and they are quite scarce. In 1873 and 1874 the Philadelphia mint issued only 1,240 with arrows quarters as Proof coins. This piece is one of only of 35,1874 quarters that NGC has graded PR-65.
