I acquired this coin on 1/19/2007. Population 1 of 557 as of 1/2007. The reverse of the coin features a depiction of the three ships which brought the first English settlers to Jamestown in 1607.On May 14, 1607, the three ships, the Susan Constant (sometimes known as the Sarah Constant), the Godspeed, and the Discovery (smallest of the three) with their crews of 105 men and boys, (there were no women on the first ships) – the Virginia Company of London – made landfall in the New World at Cape Henry. And then established the Jamestown island settelment along the James River about 40 miles (62 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean and the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. The Virginia Company was charged with establishing the first permanent English settlement in the North America. Both the river and the settlement were named for King James I of England.
