Owner Comments:

The first year issue of any coin series is always a favorite with collectors. 1878 was the first year for the Morgan Silver Dollar. This date had a fairly large mintage at 2,212,000, but only 2% were included in the GSA hoard. In general, the GSA coins for this date tend to be very baggy, and it is hard to locate a really clean one. It is interesting that no toned coins for this date seem to be found in the GSA hard black holders. The toned coins were apparently culled out and packaged separately in the soft blue packs as circulated coins, even if they were uncirculated. Numerous uncirculated toned coins have shown up in the soft blue GSA packs. There are also very few deep mirror proof like coins for this date.

This MS65PL is very rare and highly sought after. At this writing, there were only 5 coins graded MS65PL, with one finer at MS66PL. This particular coin is stunning in appearance and I believe has a shot at MS65DPL.
