Owner Comments:

This coin has the classic "blue proof" toning with a hint of golden highlights. The Proof surface is fully visible though the toning which gives the coin the classy look of a well preserved mid 19th century U.S. piece. This piece provides an outstanding presentation of the Liberty Seated design.

Many mintages were low during the Civil War era because many U.S. coins were hoarded or exported. Therefore it made little sense to issue a large number of pieces that would ultimately do little to relieve the war time coin shorage of pieces in circulation. The total mintage of 1863 quarters was 193,060 pieces. Only 460 Proof coins were issued.
