The 1878 is the first proof-only issue in the Trade Dollar series, and it is also the last year in which the mint sold examples of this denomination as part of proof sets. This coin is evenly patinated in crimson golden shades throughout, yet the mirrored surfaces shine brightly against the frosted devices. Neither the needle sharp strike nor the carefully preserved surfaces are worthy of criticism. The mirrored surfaces are unaffected by the light toning and the cameo devices are displayed quite nicely
