The 1885 three dollar gold piece had the second lowest mintage for business strikes in the three dollar series. Only 801 coins were struck that year. The very low mintage was noted by some dealers and collectors. causing a larger than normal number of coins to be set aside. Probably 350 or so different coins in all grades survive today.
