The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site was established in the state of Alabama on November 6, 1998 by an Act of Congress signed by President Bill Clinton. It seeks to commemorate the important contributions of African American airmen to the United States cause in World War II.

The Tuskegee Airmen themselves consisted of approximately 996 pilots as well as support personnel who were trained at the Tuskegee Institute. After training, they went on to fly some fifteen thousand sorties including 1578 missions.

They are credited with destroying over 250 german aircraft and many other enemy vehicles.
