The Jefferson Nickel has been circulating for since 1938 when the mint gave up on the problematic Buffalo design. The final year of the original Monticello design was 2003.

In 1994 and 1997, the Philadelphia Mint issued specimen nickels with a Coin and Currency Set.

This coin is part of a 2003-S proof set in a 5-coin holder (cent, nickel, dime, half, and dollar).
