Owner Comments:
Purchased in 1996 from Rod Bates who noted the over assayer. I really had to work with NGC to Certify the coin as R/B (C=1). A note with my label says that they do not recognize this variety and I can not add the coin to my registered set as a variety. The coin is in my registered set as a 1887 Pi R (C=14 1/8 -1).
In addition, a few years ago a small lot (3-5) coins of the 87 Pi R in high grade came up for auction. I suspect that they may have all been from this die. The census has been increasing recently, note the high concentration as all 14 are MS 66 to MS 68.
