NGC US Coin Census for Morgan Dollars (1878-1921)

Owner Comments:

Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia Of U.S. and Colonial Coins describes the 1889-CC Morgan Dollar (Br. 5610) as usually found in low grades and rare enough above EF to encourage forgeries. Breen also states that many mint-state coins are prooflike.

The low mintage of Morgane Dollars at Carson City (350,000) was due to the Harrison Administration reopening the facility after defeating Grover Cleveland in the election of 1888. Carson City continued to mint Morgan Dollars until 1893 when the Second Cleveland Administration retook the Executive Branch of government and halted minting operations for good.

Although many sources indicate that prooflike examples are common among the high grade survivors of this issue, the NGC population reports show that about 10% of the AU and mint-state coins have that attribute.

This AU prooflike was purchased on February 10,2006 as Lot 2056 in Heritage's Long Beach Auction.
